Canadian Institute for People of Afrikan Ancestry
In August 2024, the Government announced that Caribbean African Canadian Social Services (CAFCAN) was awarded $7.25 million to establish a National Institute for People of African Descent. In February 2025, the Institute was officially named the Canadian Institute for People of Afrikan Ancestry (CIPAA).
CIPAA's objectives are to:
- inform and influence policy and program development at all levels of government from a Black-centred perspective
- conduct applied research, knowledge development, information sharing, stakeholder engagement and network building
- improve social and economic outcomes for Black Canadians and their communities
Establishing CIPAA is one of the ways Canada is advancing its commitments under the United Nations International Decades for People of African Descent (the Decades). In 2018, the Government of Canada endorsed the first Decade (2015 to 2024) and in 2024 co-sponsored the resolution for a second Decade (2025 to 2034).
