Apply to become a member of the External Reference Group – Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative

Roles of the External Reference Group

  • Provide advice to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development:
    • on promoting Black Community organization inclusion
    • targeting barriers to the full participation of Black Canadians in Canada
  • Share knowledge and expertise on anti-Black racism issues in Canada
  • Support work by the Government of Canada on issues related to the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent (UN-DPAD)
  • Provide advice on new issues affecting Black Canadians and communities

Members

The reference group has 15 members from outside of the government.

Compensation, travel and accommodation

Members will receive compensation for their time based on Order in Council and Treasury Board directives.

Eligibility

To apply, you must be 18 years of age or older as of May 12, 2021, and:

How we assess your application

In your application, you need to describe how you meet the following criteria:

  • knowledge and lived experience systemic racism impacting the social and economic outcomes of Black Canadians and the organizations serving them
  • experience working or volunteering with a Black Canadian organization to support community development in any of the following sectors:
    • municipality
    • health
    • social services
    • service provider
    • private
    • non-governmental or not-for-profit organization
    • post-secondary
  • experience in either leadership and/or serving in a Black organization, committee or a board
  • communicate clearly in writing
  • analyze information and recommend solutions
  • ability to participate in a diverse group in order to build consensus

Other considerations

  • Ability to speak and write in both official languages is an asset
  • We may ask for your references
  • The selected members cannot apply for federal funding (as outlined in the terms of reference)
  • If selected, we will ask you to sign a confidentiality agreement
