Practicing UXO Safety in Debert, Nova Scotia

Camp Debert was the final staging area for units embarking from Halifax during WWII, and was one of the largest bases in Canada at the time. The base included a large ammunition depot, additional explosives stores, many range areas including a mortar range and bombing ranges, and an airfield.

In 1971, the Department of National Defense sold the majority of the lands to the Government of Nova Scotia.

Be advised that there is a chance of encountering unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) while in these areas. UXO is the term for military explosives that were used but failed to function properly.

If you see something that could be an UXO, do not touch it! If UXO is disturbed, it could explode and cause serious injury or death. Leave the area and call 911.

The following are examples of unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO).

Three UXOs in the grass
UXO in the dirt
Several UXOs in the woods
  • Don’t touch it!
  • Remember the location and leave the area.
  • Call 911.
