What is Metal Detecting?

Metal detecting involves using a portable device to locate and recover metal objects buried in the ground. Metal detectors work by transmitting an electromagnetic field from the search coil within the detector to the ground. Any metal objects within this electromagnetic field will become energized and transmit a signal to the detector, alerting the user with a beeping sound.  While metal detecting is enjoyed by many, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with this activity. There have been many cases of people finding dangerous objects such as knives, firearms, sharp metal objects, and sometimes even Unexploded Explosive Ordnance (UXO).

What is UXO?

Unexploded Explosive Ordnance (UXO) are military explosives that did not explode or function as intended. Some examples of UXO include bombs, rockets, grenades, artillery shells, flares, mortars, and hazardous residues that may remain after a partial or failed detonation.

UXO can remain buried and could still pose a risk to unsuspecting individuals if touched or disturbed. There have been instances where people have come across UXO with metal detectors. These encounters highlight the potential risks associated with this activity. Anyone who regularly engages in metal detecting should educate themselves on the proper protocols and guidelines if a UXO item is found.

• If possible, mark the area or note it’s location.
• Call 9-1-1 or local police
