Magnet Fishing has gained popularity as an outdoor recreational activity in recent years. It involves using a powerful rare earth magnet attached to a rope to retrieve metal objects in bodies of water such as rivers, canals, and lakes. While magnet fishing is enjoyed by many, it is crucial to be aware of the potential risks associated with this activity. There have been many cases of people finding dangerous objects such as knives, firearms, sharp metal, and sometimes even Unexploded Explosive Ordnance (UXO) in water bodies while magnet fishing.

What is UXO?

Unexploded Explosive Ordnance (UXO) are military explosives that did not explode or function as intended. Some examples of UXO include bombs, rockets, grenades, artillery shells, flares, mortars, and hazardous residues that may remain after a partial or failed detonation.

UXO can remain hidden underwater and could still pose a risk to unsuspecting individuals if touched or disturbed. Increasingly, there have been instances where people engaged in magnet fishing have come across UXO. These encounters highlight the potential risks associated with this activity. Anyone who regularly engages in magnet fishing should educate themselves on the proper protocols and guidelines if a UXO item is found.

Advice for Individuals

If you discover an object that looks like UXO while magnet fishing, consider the object to be explosive and dangerous. Do not attempt to bring it onshore or onboard. If possible, tie off the line and lower it to the bottom.

If the item is brought ashore or onboard, do not disturb it and do not touch it!
