Inclusive Language

The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are committed to using terminology that is continuously evolving, accurate, and inclusive. Inclusive language includes words and phrases that can be used to help make all members of the Defence Team feel welcomed and accepted. The way we speak to one other is important aspect of fostering an inclusive environment.

What is a pronoun?

Pronouns are words that we use in place of nouns or names in a sentence to make it less repetitive. A pronoun is a word that refers to either the people talking (I or you) or someone or something that is being talked about (she, it, them and this). Pronouns aren’t just used inside the 2SLGBTQI+ communities but are used by everyone.

Inclusive language tips

How can we replace greetings such as "Ladies and Gentlemen" to be more inclusive? Try using folks, everyone, distinguished guests, team, class, etc. When greeting others, be mindful of inclusive language: "Good morning folks" "Can I get you all something?" "Thanks everyone!"

Using gender-inclusive language respects and acknowledges the gender identities of all people and removes assumptions.

While some of these changes may take longer to implement, using neutral language in your workplace respects the privacy of others. It also signals that your workplace is an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone.
