Indigenous-Crafted Poppies

1. The purpose of this CANCDTGEN is to provide direction on the authorized wear of Indigenous-crafted poppies by Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers during the Remembrance Day period.
2. In recognition of the significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples to Canada’s military history, Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers are authorized to wear Indigenous-crafted poppies from the last Friday in October until 11 November, inclusive.
3. In accordance with reference A, Indigenous-crafted poppies must meet the following specifications:
   1. Diameter: Minimum 3.8 cm; maximum 5.1 cm
   2. Colour: Red with black accents
   3. Materials: May include culturally significant elements such as beads, seal skin, porcupine quill, caribou bone, or other traditional materials
   4. The Indigenous poppy shall be worn in the same manner and location as the Royal Canadian Legion poppy, as outlined in CJCR Gp Dress Instructions (reference B).
   5. The use of miniature Canadian flag pins or other unauthorized fasteners remains prohibited.
4. Wearing Indigenous poppies is a visible act of reconciliation and respect. This practice aligns with the Canadian Cadet Program’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and recognition of Indigenous service (reference C). Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers are encouraged to engage with local Indigenous communities and artisans when sourcing these poppies.
