CANCDTGEN 011/19
Wearing of Helmets on Dinghy Sailboat, Powerboat, Keelboat and Whaler

1. Safety remains a critical requirement to the Natl CJCR Sp Gp’s core mandate. As the Organization evolves, risks need to be reviewed and policy and guidance updated to effectively deliver a fun, challenging and safe program for today’s youth.

2. Based on current research and industry practices, the following updates to the Interim Activity Safety Direction (IASD) are effective immediately and rescinds CANCDTGEN 004/17:

  1. Dinghy Sailboat. All cadets, while participating in dinghy sailing, shall wear a helmet. All other individuals are required to wear a helmet once they board a dinghy sailboat.
  2. Powerboat. Helmets may be required for the launch and recovery of the powerboat from a vessel; however, are not to be worn during operation.
  3. Keelboats. Helmets are not required during operation.
  4. Whaler. Helmets are not required during operation.

3. We continue to monitor and review head injuries sustained while sailing and align ourselves with current research and industry standards/practices for prevention and minimizing the risk of injury.

4. The updated IASD can be accessed in the Cadet365 SharePoint site. (user identification and password required).
