Conflict and communication

From: National Defence

It’s important to know how to properly communicate with others when you’re dealing with a conflict. Communication is at the heart of any personal relationship, and this communication, or lack of, can sometimes lead to conflict. Communication courses and workshops are available to Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and their families to develop skills in problem solving, resolving conflicts, and non-violent handling of disputes.

What is the Inter-Comm course

In the Inter-Comm course you will gain knowledge and life-skills to improve communication in your every day life.  It examines the theory of conflict, styles of communication, and effective strategies for communication.  You will develop the mind set and techniques required to deal with conflict effectively.

Inter-Comm is a free, interactive learning environment, led by the Military Family Resource Centres and Strengthening the Forces health promotion educators, and is delivered in 4 three-hour sessions.  Each of the 4 modules presents skills and opportunities that will help you become a better communicator:

  • Module 1: Introduction to conflict theory
  • Module 2: Communication
  • Module 3: Interest-based communication and collaborative communication model
  • Module 4: Role play and practice

Who can enroll in the Inter-Comm course

The Inter-Comm course is designed for a wide range of CAF personnel and their adult family members who are over the age of 18 years.

The Inter-Comm course is a collaborative project between the Director General Alternative Dispute Resolution, the Directorate of Military Families, and the Directorate of Force Health Protection as part of the Strengthening the Forces program.

For more information about the Inter-Comm course, contact your Health Promotion Office.
