Other drugs

From: National Defence

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has a zero tolerance policy regarding the use of drugs. Consuming drugs can impair normal psychological and physical functioning, ultimately putting the safety of other CAF members and yourself at risk.

Drug use in the military – how safe is it

The use of drugs in an operational context is extremely dangerous, especially since many CAF members use firearms and heavy machinery on a daily basis. The following are examples of how the use of illicit drugs can affect your safety and be fatal in combat situations.

LSD

LSD is a hallucinogenic drug and can visually impair you in a combat situation. The use of this drug also affects your body movements which may prevent you from safely operating machinery, putting yourself and other CAF members at risk.

Cocaine

Ingesting cocaine raises your body’s temperature, and can cause organ failure if the body’s internal temperature is too high. When vital organs such as the brain cannot function properly, this causes irregular heartbeat and breathing. In combat situations where the climate is already warm, the use of cocaine can be fatal due to the risk of easily overheating.
