What We Heard Report: Help us choose a new name for the Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre

Introduction
In October 2025, the Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre (SMSRC) held online consultations to help choose a new name. An online survey asked participants to select their preferred option from a list of five names.
Participants could also share comments and suggestions. More than 700 people responded to the online consultation.
Following careful consideration on the feedback received, three names were identified for additional consultations.
Between December 2025 and February 2026, we held additional internal consultations with Defence Advisory Groups and Defence Team Networks. We asked for their views on the three identified names.
What we heard
As part of the consultation process, participants’ feedback showed a number of consistent themes. All submissions were thoroughly examined and considered in the selection of the final name.
Examples of feedback received included:
Clear, people-focused name
- The name should be simple and easy to understand.
- Clear wording helps people find support more easily.
- The name should focus on supporting people, not institutional language.
Inclusive and neutral wording
- Participants preferred language that feels welcoming and respectful of different experiences.
- Some raised concerns about the word “dignity,” saying it could feel subjective and not trauma-informed.
- Overall, there was a preference for neutral and inclusive wording.
Reflecting the Centre’s role
- Feedback on the word “harm” was mixed:
- Some felt it clearly described the role of the Centre.
- Others felt it was too broad or could downplay serious issues.
- Many preferred the inclusion of both “support” and “resource” to reflect the full scope of services.
What we have done and next steps
After thoroughly reviewing all feedback, we selected a new name: the Defence Community Support and Resource Centre (DCSRC). We announced the new name on April 24, 2026.
The DCSRC will promote the new name through various channels to raise awareness among Defence community members and partners.
