Hazardous Environment Training (HET)

Training overview

Hazardous Environment Training (HET) is conducted at Peace Support Training Centre (PSTC) for Civil servants in preparation for deployment to nations with an elevated threat/hazard level.  The HET is the core component for the Canadian civilian Pre-deployment training program. Its curriculum is based on the needs of personnel from the Department of Foreign Affairs Trade and Development (DFATD) and other Government Departments (OGDs) and is based on but not limited to Individual Battle Tasks Standards (IBTS). Every year PSTC trains approximately 300 Civil servants through this training program. The HET training package is a five-day course based around both classroom and practical exercises. The teaching revolves around proven principles as opposed to situation scripting, thus better enabling the student to read and react to unforeseen circumstances. 

Aim

The aim of the training is to empower the individual to reduce the risks they face, respond appropriately when confronted with a potentially dangerous situation and ultimately to maximise control over their own environment.

Content

The training is conducted by knowledge theory lessons and practical training.  All theory lessons are reinforced during the one confirmatory exercise at the end of the training.  Training subjects are; Conduct after Capture, Personal Protective Equipment, Convoy and VIP Escort, Enhanced First Aid, Radio Communications, Explosive Theory Awareness Training (ETHAR), Active Shooter, Mob Violence and Weapon Threat Recognition.

Pre-requisites and Eligibility

The target audience for this training is primarily Canadian civilian government employees from GAC.
