International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: Preventing violence, strengthening leadership

Observed annually on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is a global call to prevent and address gender-based violence (GBV) in all its forms.
For Canada, preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a core defence and security commitment, both within our institution and in operations abroad. As an organization responsible for defending Canadians and their interests, and contributing to global security, the Defence Team is committed to upholding human rights and dignity as essential components of both its mission and values.
For the Defence Team, this day reaffirms that preventing SGBV is both a moral imperative as well as a legal and operational necessity. Any act of SGBV, whether in conflict zones or within the Defence Team, undermines stability, cohesion, and trust.
From awareness to action
Prevention of SGBV was a key theme at the recent Women, Peace and Security Conference, where discussions highlighted that addressing violence against women and girls is central to protecting civilians and supporting long-term stability. Such violence often intensifies during conflict, humanitarian crises, and natural disasters, when women and girls face heightened risks of sexual violence, trafficking, and exploitation. Understanding these dynamics improves operational planning and helps create safer conditions that build trust with affected communities.
Scenario-based training for military operations, especially to prevent and respond to conflict-related sexual violence, remains essential for preparedness. These exercises help members recognize risks, engage respectfully with communities, and report concerns through established channels. Integrating prevention measures into standard operating procedures makes them part of everyday practice. Leaders play a critical role by setting clear expectations, identifying protection measures when issuing orders, and reviewing outcomes to make prevention measurable.
Leadership, accountability, and collaboration
Prevention of SGBV depends on strong professional standards, shared values, and accountability. Collaboration with legal, political, and humanitarian partners helps identify emerging threats and prevent harm before it occurs. This approach aligns with Canada’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (2023–2029) and supports the Defence Team’s ongoing culture evolution initiatives to foster a respectful and safe workplace for all.
On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Defence Team reaffirms its commitment to creating a work environment where every member of the team is safe, respected, and valued, and to leading by example at home and abroad.
