Connect With Peers Affected by Sexual Misconduct and Military Sexual Trauma

August 15, 2024 – Defence Stories

The Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre (SMSRC), in partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), is hosting two types of peer support groups for people affected by sexual misconduct and/or military sexual trauma (MST) this fall.

Formal Peer Support Group

Ten group sessions hosted by a trained peer supporter with lived experience and a mental health professional. Sessions are guided by educational materials that cover topics such as trauma, moral injury, coping and self-care, and are supported by peer group discussion.

Informal Peer Support Group

Eight group sessions hosted by two trained peer supporters with lived experience. The informal group layout fosters mutual support and understanding through spontaneous conversations. Discussions are guided by participants’ needs and interests as it relates to their lived experiences.

Services are available virtually to those 18 years and older who are either current or former:

  • CAF members/Veterans
  • DND public service employees

Participants may join the informal or formal group, or both. English or French groups are available. Participants will be placed in a group that takes into account their identified needs, to the greatest extent possible.

If you or someone you know is interested, here are the dates for the upcoming fall groups:

Formal Peer Support Group: September 23 to November 29
Deadline to register: September 13

Informal Peer Support Group: October 14 to December 6
Deadline to register: October 4

Safety and confidentiality

All participants must complete an intake before taking part in services. During that intake, they will discuss their readiness to participate with a peer support staff member. Additionally, they will review the code of conduct, consent and confidentiality forms, and safety and emergency protocols.

Participants will have continuous access to extra support through the SMSRC’s 24/7-line counsellors, if needed.

Whether you are seeking solace, to connect with others, or a place to share and explore your healing journey, our group services welcome you.

For more information or to join a group, please reach out to at SMSRCPSP-CSRISPSP@forces.gc.ca or the SMSRC 24/7 line at 1-844-750-1648.
