Clerk of the Privy Council Message for National Indigenous Peoples Day

This message is being sent to you from the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people.

Today, National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, contributions, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada.

For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their cultures and heritages at this time of year because of the significance of the solstice, the longest day of the year.

I encourage you to take this opportunity to continue learning about Indigenous Peoples, their traditions, histories, cultures, knowledge, ways of being and experiences. Consider how you can take an active role in advancing reconciliation in your work as a public servant and in your daily life. Read and listen to First Nations, Inuit and Métis stories, participate in activities in your community, and take the time to learn more about the role of both historic and modern treaties, agreements and alliances as the foundations of our ongoing history.

Reconciliation happens when we work to build understanding, respect, partnership and recognition of rights into our work. As public servants, we must continue to put reconciliation at the forefront of our work, actions and institutions, as we build a renewed relationship with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples based on the recognition of rights, respect and partnership.

This work will take generations, but we’re making progress; this is one way that we are bringing our public service values and ethics of excellence and respect for people to life.   

Today and throughout the month of June, let’s celebrate the contributions and cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada and take this opportunity to continue learning and advancing on our reconciliation journey together.
