Fifth edition of the Official Languages newsletter

April 5, 2024 - Defence Stories

The Director Official Languages (DOL) is pleased to share the fifth edition of its Newsletter, (accessible only on the National Defence network), published on a quarterly basis.

The newsletter is one of the many initiatives DOL has taken to promote a sustainable culture of linguistic respect and individual official languages (OL) rights within the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces, in accordance with Canada's Official Languages Act (OLA), the Treasury Board OL Policy and Directives, and the DND/CAF Official Languages Strategy and Action Plan [PDF-291KB] (accessible only on the National Defence network).

Within the newsletter, you will find in the section “A word from the Director”, useful information about Building Language Capacity in the Workplace. As this is a shared responsibility, this section indicates the role of managers in terms of training, as well as improving and maintaining skills. As for employees, they must include language learning activities in the learning plan of their performance management agreement.

The Newsletter also contains various important subjects related to your OL rights and responsibilities/obligations, including the distribution of unilingual documents. You will also find resources and tools to help you create an OL-friendly workplace.

DOL hopes that this information channel will help raise the level of understanding of OL rights and responsibilities among the entire Defence Team and motivate everyone's commitment to respect the OLA, particularly through the sharing of best practices within our organization.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.
