Student hiring season is here! To give enough time to recruit and select students to join your team and to ensure students can start working full-time after school is done, student hiring for summer starts now! The National Student Hiring Team can help you find the right fit for your team.
Last year, the Department of National Defence (DND) surpassed the departmental goal of hiring 1200 students. This year, we are aiming to hire 1200 students, of whom 5% identify as Indigenous, and bridge 200 recent graduates to support our efforts of rejuvenating our workforce and build our organization of the future.
Students can bring fresh ideas, new skills, and perspectives to your team. They can help develop leadership within your team by giving your employees supervisory experience. Did you know that hiring a student is a cost-efficient strategy for your staffing needs? A student can cost as little as $17,500 per year (full-time in summer and part-time through the school year), with the benefit of being able to bridge them into indeterminate and determinate positions within 5 years of graduating. Do your part in hiring the future workforce!
Student recruitment options
- Request referrals from:
- The National Student Hiring team - If you would like to prioritize a position for students from an identified employment equity group, include this in your email request.
- Visit the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), with more than 30,000 students available.
- Connect with Universities or colleges for Co-op/internship students.
- Contact DND’s Recruitment team who can help find a career event near you or who can promote your student job opportunities on your behalf.
Submit the staffing request
- An HR Connect RH agent can help:

- Complete the online staffing HR Request (only accessible on the National Defence network) for you on the spot.
- Or you can submit a request for an Initial student hire (only accessible on the National Defence network) or a Student rehire (only accessible on the National Defence network)in GC HRMS 8.9.
- Keep your assessment simple!
- Follow the Security Screening Requirements (only accessible on the National Defence network) and include “NEW Student Hiring or Returning FSWEP/COOP Student” in the email subject line of your request for quicker processing times.
- Plan IT equipment early.
