If you have worked in the public service for any length of time, you will have likely heard of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). However, did you know that the Department of National Defence’s EAP is a bit different than most?

What is an Employee Assistance Program?

An EAP provides free short‑term and confidential counseling and crisis services to persons employed and their dependents who are experiencing personal or work-related issues.

How does our program differ?

DND’s EAP also includes Peer Support. This service is provided through our volunteer Peer Advisors, who are DND colleagues trained and skilled in active-listening, supporting and providing internal and community resources.

DND employees can connect with a Peer Advisor listed on the Organizational Well-Being SharePoint (you are now leaving the Government of Canada website) site (requires D365 login) or by emailing the EAP positional mailbox. Peer Advisors are available during working hours, from Monday to Friday.

What tools, resources, and services are available?

The Organizational Well-Being programs’ SharePoint site has a lot of helpful information about the mental health and well-being services available to public servants within the Department of National Defence and so much more! The site includes:

  • Mental Health and Well-Being Services for Employees
    • Crisis and short-term counselling services
    • A digital wellness library (LifeSpeak)
    • Peer support
  • Mental Health and Well-Being Services for Managers
    • Manager Advisory Services
    • Specialized Organizational Services (SOS)
  • Learning Tools and Resources
    • Educational Resources: Job aides, articles & learning series,
    • Foundational Mental Health Training: For employees and managers
  • Webinars and Events - We encourage you to register (you are now leaving the Government of Canada website) for our upcoming webinars:
    • December 13/15: 'Tis the Season to Recharge and Reconnect - Learn more about the concept of “unplugging”, how it contributes to our mental health and well-being and how many of us got to be so tethered to our devices.
    • January 10/11: Promoting Physical and Mental Health Now, and Throughout the Year - Learn about physical activity and how we can fit more of it into our busy lives, knowing the positive impacts that it can have on our mental health.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Canadian Forces Member Assistance Program (CFMAP) are here to help public service employees and CAF personnel, families, and veterans cope with professional or personal challenges that may impact their health and well-being.

Whether you are looking to improve your well-being or access any of the many services and programs that are available to you, help is available if you need it.
