What we heard from the consultations on Peer Support Program

In fall 2021, the Sexual Misconduct Response Centre invited currently serving and former CAF members with lived experience of sexual assault and sexual harassment to take part in a consultation process to develop a peer support program. In addition to consultations with people with lived experience, we also engaged with subject matter experts in trauma, military sexual trauma, and peer support model development.
What we heard
Since then, we analyzed the consultation data and identified key themes and recommendations.
- Co-facilitation: Have the option of peer groups with and without clinical co-facilitation
- Communication: Ensure broad communication for everyone to be aware of the programming options
- Screening process: Create a safe and inclusive intake process and ensure the safety of all participants
- Program delivery: Offer the choice between group or individual peer support, in-person or virtually
- Safety: Guarantee confidentiality and independence from CAF chain of command and rank structure
- Training and experience: Provide appropriate and consistent training for peer supporters in mental health, trauma, and in ethics and boundaries.
