Military Spouse Employment Initiative

I was excited about my husband being posted to 17 Wing Winnipeg. As a military spouse, I’m always willing to make the move to a new posting. However, with every move, there’s always the related stress of finding a new job.

Soon after we arrived in Winnipeg, I learned about the Military Spouse Initiative. Applying to get on the inventory was quick and easy. I applied online and went through an interview selection process. In the end, I was offered a position as an administrative support assistant on a casual basis with the 17 Wing Comptroller Branch.

In my job, I do a variety of things: reception, central registry, material write-off, updating files, and keeping the leave tracker updated. I also do in and out clearances and other administrative duties. With the job being so varied, I learned a lot about the comptroller branch and had opportunities to grow and learn.

In August, I was hired back as a term in the same job. Working in this position as a casual and then as a term (temporary) employee, I worked with different organizations at DND. The experience taught me the value of working together. I also learned about new employment opportunities at DND. So in November, I got an indeterminate (permanent) position with 17 Wing Headquarters as an executive office records support clerk.

Through the Military Spouse Employment Initiative, I gained employment, learned more about DND, and added new knowledge and skills in my field of work. I also met new people and created new friendships. Most importantly, I learned why my husband is a dedicated member of the CAF.
