October 2: Twitter Update from the Deputy Minister Jody Thomas

October 6, 2020 - Defence Stories

Friday Update: October is #CanadasHealthyWorkplaceMonth. The #DefenceTeam has a wide variety of workplaces depending on function and location. But an emphasis on respect, safety, and mental and physical well-being should be paramount in all of them. #CHWM

This year’s #CHWM activities are fully virtual. However you participate, understand that we all have a stake in building and maintaining healthy workplaces for ourselves and our #DefenceTeam colleagues. More: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/maple-leaf/defence/2020/10/chwm-2020-message-dt-mental-health-co-champions.html

Building resilience is a process. We struggle, we fail, we learn, we try again. Whatever stage you’re at in your process, you aren’t alone; our whole #DefenceTeam is behind you. And there’s help if you need it: http://intranet.mil.ca/en/res/health-services/mental-health/index.page

We also need to talk about cyber security. Our daily tools—systems, equipment, devices—are powerful. For us, and for those who would harm us. There’ll be lots of talk about #CyberResilience this month. It matters: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/maple-leaf/defence/2020/10/csam-2020-message-dnd-chief-information-officer.html

“Don’t we have IT folks whose jobs are to protect us from threats?” We sure do. The rest of us need to do *our* part to support their INCREDIBLY complicated and difficult work by following simple #CyberHygiene practices.

Working from home? Be *especially* hyper vigilant around your equipment, your WiFi and anything to do with your work. Only you should see or touch your equipment and whatever it is you’re working on. Only you. No exceptions.

Hyper vigilance is also the right way to address Canada’s spiking COVID-19 curve. We know what we need to do. But we also need to actually do it. Those basic, simple, lifesaving things. #Masks #Handwashing #PhysicalDistancing

Lots to think about right now. You don’t need to think about it all at once or all the time. But do listen to yourself when you need a break. Take care of yourself, and each other. We’ll get through this together. And #WashYourHands
