70th Anniversary of the Start of the Korean War

Video / June 25, 2020

Transcript

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.

And today we remember the heroic deeds and sacrifices made by our courageous women and men who served during that war.

On June 25, 1950, Canada joined 18 other countries to contribute to a United Nations multinational force that helped defend the Republic of Korea. Over the course of three years, more than 26,000 Canadians bravely served on land, in the air, and at sea to restore peace and freedom in the country.

At home, roughly 5,000 women also enlisted, and helped maintain our country’s military capabilities.

By the time the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed on July 27, 1953, 516 Canadians had lost their lives in that conflict… and hundreds more were wounded.

Today, we remember those who fought for freedom with our partner and friend, the Republic of Korea and we honour the achievements and sacrifices of those who bravely fought to achieve peace at home and around the world.

N’oublions pas. Lest we forget.
