(SVH) Today, we’re joined by Captain Adam El-Batal who recently participated in Exercise SCOTTISH ASSAULTER at the Camp Atterbury Maneuver Training Center in Indiana, utilizing the training areas of U.S. allies. So, what sort of training did you take part in during Exercise SCOTTISH ASSAULTER and how did it differ from other exercises you’ve taken part of?
(AEB) So, the Essex And Kent Scottish took part in pairs and Live Fire section attacks on Exercise SCOTTISH soldiers. There are core entry skills that we're always developing on training nights and weekends. But Camp Atterbury did provide us a unique opportunity to use foreign nations' state-of-the-art technology on their ranges.
(SVH) So, what type of benefits did using this training area provide?
(AEB) So Camp Atterbury is a U.S. National Guard base that provides unique training areas in state-of-the-art range technology for soldiers to use and practice with. Windsor being a border town with the States, traveling to Camp Atterbury does not take us much more time as it would to CFB, Meaford or Borden, which are our normal training areas here in Canada. The soldiers in the Essex And Kent Scottish are always excited to train at Camp Atterbury, because of the unique train areas it does provide us.
(SVH) Can you tell us about the overall objective of Exercise SCOTTISH ASSAULTER?
(AEB) Exercise SCOTTISH ASSAULTER provides us the opportunity to allow our soldiers to practice pairs and section-level movements. It also allows to practice their core entry skills, including teamwork, which is essential for all CAF activities. But being especially important on a Live Fire range, we are practising those tactical movements with a lot of different soldiers moving at the same time. The exercise also provides us an opportunity to validate and allow our section commanders to practice their leadership role leading a section at a time.
(SVH) Can you tell us a little bit about the Essex & Kent Scottish Regiment?
(AEB) The regiment currently employs a rifle company, which is split in the Windsor and Chatham garrison. The unit has rich and old history, which has battle arms going back to both First and Second World Wars. Currently, we have a person deployed on international operations and whenever the time comes for us to look for volunteers to go fight floods or other domestic operations. We always have an abundance of great professional volunteers ready to go.
(SVH) Anything else you’d like to add?
(AEB) Yes! I would just like to say thank you to the Indiana National Guard, U.S. Military personnel and civilian employees who work at Camp Atterbury for always being ready to host us when we have exercises there. Their hard work in planning ensures the success of our training exercises we conduct there.
