What we do
The Anti-Racism Secretariat within the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces was created in December 2020 to examine racism and discrimination in the organization.
Our mission is to identify and support measures to increase representation, support and advancement of Indigenous, Black and racialized Defence Team members.
Specific tasks
The Anti-Racism Secretariat:
- Provides direct support to the Minister’s Advisory Panel on systemic racism and discrimination as they engage with stakeholders, analyse data, and consider recommendations;
- Identifies systemic barriers that lead to racism and proposes solutions within the Defence Team;
- Supports an enhanced governance within the Employment Equity, Diversity and Inclusion domains by working with Functional Authorities, Senior Levels of the Defence Team, Champions, Defence Advisory Groups and Networks; and
- Promotes culture change and raises awareness through various initiatives across the Defence Team in facilitated conversations on anti-racism.
The team works with senior leaders and key stakeholders who are the driving force behind these efforts, including Defence Advisory Groups, various networks and interdepartmental committees and Champions.
The Secretariat also engages with other anti-racism secretariats across the federal government to ensure a uniform approach to its work.
