Canada's tariffs: Automobiles

Canada has put in place a series of measures to protect the Canadian auto sector and its workers in response to U.S. tariff measures.

United States

What it applies to

Since April 9, 2025, Canada imposes 25 per cent tariffs on:

  • non-CUSMA compliant vehicles imported into Canada from the United States,
  • non-Canadian and non-Mexican content of CUSMA compliant vehicles imported into Canada from the United States.

Why Canada applies it

This is a countermeasure put in place by Canada in response to the tariffs imposed in April 2025 by the U.S. on the Canadian auto industry. The government continues to engage with the U.S. to resolve these tariffs.
