Consultations on the Taxation of Vacant Lands

Current status: Closed

Budget 2024 announced that the government is considering a tax on residentially zoned vacant land. On October 8, 2024, the federal government launched consultations with the intention of hearing views from stakeholders across Canada and gauging interest in such a proposal from provinces, territories, and municipalities.

This engagement process gave all interested members of the public and provincial, territorial and municipal governments the opportunity to provide input on this topic. The consultation ran from October 8, 2024 to December 31, 2024. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Key questions for consideration

The federal government undertook this consultation to:

  • Hear views from all stakeholders on the potential application of vacant land taxes, including feedback on their potential design and impacts; and
  • Gauge interest from provinces, territories, and municipalities on the potential introduction of vacant land taxes at the provincial, territorial, and municipal levels, with federal funding to support their implementation.

What's next?

While this formal consultation has now concluded, Canadians are welcome to share their ideas and comments with the Department of Finance at any time.
