Ill or Injured Employees (and survivors) at Correctional Service Canada
If you are a federal government employee, the Government Employees’ Compensation Act (GECA) guarantees your rights and defines your responsibilities under the law. Compensation shall be paid to an employee who is caused a personal injury by an accident or incident occurring in the course of their employment.
All employees of Correctional Service Canada (CSC), who are federal government employees, are eligible for any work-related injury/illness.
Compensation benefit can be provided through:

I was ill or injured while at work
A person should make a claim when he or she has been injured at work and received medical attention, other than first aid, or lost time from work for an injury or illness sustained at work.
My responsibilities
When it comes to illness and injury at work, these are your responsibilities as an employee.
- Get external medical attention. When you receive external medical care, make sure that you tell the doctor or nurse that you were injured at work.
- Inform your supervisor or manager as soon as possible following the injury or illness. Your manager will then ensure that the work related injury or illness involving medical attention or lost time is reported to the ESDC Labour Program within 3 days of the occurrence.
- Complete all leave forms for the time you are away from work.
- Maintain contact with your manager or Human Resources advisor during the time you are away from work. This includes ensuring your manager is informed about prospective return to work dates and any limitations you may have following the injury or illness in relation to performing your duties.
- Cooperate with the WCB and complete all forms and requests for information that they require to process your claim.
If you are injured at work or become ill because of your work, you may be entitled to compensation for expenses such as lost earnings, medical care and rehabilitation costs.

Compensation for federal workers
Through the Government Employees Compensation Act (GECA), the Government of Canada may provide workers’ compensation benefits to federal employees who are injured or become ill as a result of their work.
The Federal Workers’ Compensation Service (FWCS) of Employment and Social Development Canada partners with provincial workers' compensation boards to process claims, and support the safe and timely return to work.
EI sickness benefits
EI sickness benefits can provide you with financial help if you can't work for medical reasons. You need a medical certificate showing that you can't work for medical reasons and for approximately how long.
Survivor benefits
The Public Service Income Benefit Plan gives survivors of slain federal employees an additional benefit along with other pension benefits. The employer will apply for this for the survivor. Find out if you are eligible.
