2022 National Health Survey Results – Substance Use

Out of 1,404 survey participants, 413 (29%) reported that they used substances in federal prison within the past 6 months.

Of those (29% of the total sample) that indicated they used substances in the past six months:

Smoking substances

323 of the 413 participants (78%) specified that they had smoked substances. Among these 323 people, 201 (62%) smoked one day a week or more and 146 (45%) reported sharing devices used for smoking.

Snorting substances

260 of the 413 participants (63%) specified that they had snorted substances. Among these 260 people, 136 (52%) snorted one day a week or more and 128 (49%) reported sharing devices used for snorting.

Injecting substances

51 of the 413 participants (12%) specified that they injected substances within the past six months. Among these 51 people, 28 (55%) injected one day a week or more and 24 (47%) used a previously used needle.

What it means

Sharing needles, cookers, pipes, and straws puts you at risk of getting infectious diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C. Talk to a member of the Health Services team about drug prevention and treatment, harm reduction measures, and other supports that can help you use less.
