Atlantic Institution is a maximum-security facility for men. The institution is based on a triangular design model with direct observation cell ranges for older constructed units and reduced movement out of the unit for newly constructed units.
Atlantic Institution is located in the rural community of Renous, New Brunswick. It is:
- 40 kilometres from the city of Miramichi, New Brunswick
- 10 kilometres from the Village of Blackville, New Brunswick.
Atlantic Institution opened in 1987 as a maximum-security facility. Atlantic Institution is located on land that was previously managed by the Department of National Defense and operated as an ammunition depot.
