Host an in-person workshop
In-person workshops are hosted by various regional partners across Canada each year, from April 1 to March 31. These workshops are designed to be as interactive as possible and are generally two days in length. Some workshops may be customized for a one-day or three-day format, depending on areas of interest and need, as well as our availability.
It costs CAN$750 to host a workshop, and institutions must complete the Apply to host an in-person workshop form. Applications are due by March 13, 2026, and selections will be made by April 10, 2026.
The following criteria are used to select hosts:
- The host institution’s reason or rationale for hosting the workshop
- The scope of the audience reached
- CCI and CHIN’s need to balance offerings among different types of institutions across different regions in Canada
Preference is given to applicants who can demonstrate a broad benefit to the heritage community rather than to a single institution.
Eligible institutions
The primary client groups for these workshops are provincial museum associations, provincial archival associations and Indigenous organizations, as the aim of in-person workshops is to provide training in the different regions across Canada. However, on occasion, museums or other heritage institutions may also host these workshops if their involvement allows CCI and CHIN to more effectively reach the museum professionals of a particular region.
Responsibilities when hosting an in-person workshop
In addition to hosting the in-person workshop, responsibilities also include ensuring the following requirements.
Selecting a suitable workshop location
Hosts must ensure that appropriate facilities are selected for in-person workshops, as some may have unique requirements. Most workshop participants benefit from discussions within the context of a collection. Where possible, hosts are therefore requested to ensure that participants have access to storage and display areas.
Promoting the workshop
CCI and CHIN promote all workshops through their websites and may promote them through eNews and social media, as needed. Hosts must also promote their workshops to appropriate target audiences.
Managing participant registrations
Hosts are responsible for determining registration fees and for processing all participant registrations. Due to the hands-on nature of these workshops, enrolment must be limited to ensure that all participants enjoy the best possible learning experience.
Cancellations
Please note that CCI and CHIN reserve the right to cancel a workshop if the minimum enrolment requirement is not met.
Providing training materials
CCI and CHIN provide workshop manuals and related materials in digital format to hosts prior to events. These can be printed by the host or forwarded electronically to participants.
