OLMC vitality composite indicators project
Detailed tables
The detailed tables present more than 50 variables grouped under six dimensions. Filters allow users to display data on official language minority communities by dimension, province, and economic region.
It is possible to obtain the definition of each variable by clicking on them directly within the table.
The data presented on this page can be downloaded in CSV format from the Open Government's Composite indicators page.

Note: Population data use the definition of the first official language spoken (with multiple responses distributed equally).
Relative population growth
The Relative Population Growth (RPG) measures the change in proportion (or population share) of a given population. An RPG greater than 1.00 indicates that the given population's share of the population increased over the time period in question while an RPG of less than 1.00 indicates a decrease in the population share.
OLMC Growth Rate (2011-2021)
The Growth Rate (GR) refers to the change in size of the OLMC population over time. A growth rate greater than 1.00 indicates that the given population increased in absolute numbers over time while a growth rate lower than 1.00 indicates the population declined in absolute numbers.
Total demographic dependency ratio
The total demographic dependency ratio is the ratio of the combined youth population (0 to 14 years) and senior population (65 or older) to the working-age population (15 to 64 years). It is expressed as the number of "dependents" for every 100 "workers": youth (ages 0 to 14) + seniors (age 65 or older) per 100 workers (aged 15 to 64).
Senior demographic dependency ratio
The senior demographic dependency ratio is the ratio of seniors (aged 65 or over) to the working-age population (aged 15 to 64).
Weight of the OLMC population
Proportion of official language minority communities.
OLMC population median age
The median age is the age that divides a population into two numerically equal groups; that is, half the people are younger than this age and half are older. It is a single index that summarizes the age distribution of a population. For this project, median age has been calculated based on first official language spoken (single responses).
Change in the bilingualism in the majority population
Change in the number of individuals who were bilingual in the majority population between 2011 and 2021.
Intergenerational language transfer by home language
Intergenerational language transfer
Ratio between:
- Numerator:
- Number of children born in Canada, aged 0 to 17, living in a household where at least one parent reports the minority language as one of their mother tongues, and who themselves report speaking that language at least regularly at home.
- Denominator:
- Total number of children born in Canada, aged 0 to 17, living in a household where at least one parent reports the minority language as their mother tongue.
Intergenerational language transfer by mother tongue
Intergenerational language transfer (MT)
Ratio between:
- Numerator:
- Number of children born in Canada, aged 0 to 17, living in a household where at least one parent reports the minority language as one of their mother tongues (MT), and who themselves report that language among their mother tongues.
- Denominator:
- Total number of children born in Canada, aged 0 to 17, living in a household where at least one parent reports a minority language as one of their mother tongues.
Intergenerational language transfer by knowledge of official languages
Intergenerational language transfer

Number of individuals who can conduct a conversation in both official languages (English and French).
Linguistic Continuity Index (based on language spoken most often at work)
The Linguistic Continuity Index based on language used most often at work measures the proportion of the population in the labour force with a given mother tongue with the proportion who speak that language most often at work. Multiple responses have been distributed equally among declared languages.
Linguistic Continuity Index (based on language spoken at least most often at home)

The Linguistic Continuity Index based on language spoken at least regularly at work measures the proportion of the population in the labour force with a given mother tongue with the proportion who speak that language at least regularly at work. Multiple responses have been distributed equally among declared languages.
Linguistic Continuity Index (based on language spoken at least regularly at home)
The Linguistic Continuity Index based on language spoken at least regularly at home measures the proportion of the population with a given mother tongue with the proportion who speak that language at least regularly at home. Multiple responses have been distributed equally among declared languages.
Territorial size (km2)
Territorial size (km2) refers to the total land and water area a country or region occupies, measured in square kilometers.
OLMC population per km2
Average number of individuals in an Official Language Minority Community (OLMC) living per square kilometer of land area.
Standard distance analysis (from mean center)
Measure of the compactness of a spatial distribution of entities around its mean center. The standard distance (or standard deviation of distance) is usually represented as a circle, where the radius of the circle represents one standard deviation covering 68% of the OLMC population from it's mean population center.
Population mean distance
The population mean distance (km) calculates a nearest neighbor index based on the average distance from each feature to its nearest neighboring feature. For our analysis, this represents the observed mean distance between each member of the official language minority community within a specific region.
Official language minority community
Size of the official language minority community based on the first official language spoken.
Distance band
For this analysis, the distance band calculation will determine the value associated with the average distance (km) that individuals who are members of OLMCs in the region will have to travel to reach 1,000 other individuals who are members of OLMCs.
