Odyssey – Language Assistant Program

Odyssey is a bilingual, paid work experience that provides opportunities for postsecondary students to travel to another part of the country. English-speaking candidates can work in English in Quebec or New Brunswick, while French-speaking candidates can work in French in a province or territory other than their own.

Participants work in a classroom as an ESL (English-as-a-second-language), FSL (French-as-a-second-language), or FFL (French-as-a-first-language) language assistant for 25 hours per week and receive a gross salary of approximately $30,000 for a nine-month work term.

Who can apply

To be eligible, candidates must:

  • have excellent language skills, both oral and written in either English or French (candidates must be able to demonstrate high fluency);
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada (those studying in Canada on a student visa are not eligible); and
  • have completed, by the start of their work term and within the last 10 years, at least one full year of postsecondary studies. Quebec candidates must have completed two years of college-level studies or one year of university. For studies outside of Canada, candidates must have completed at least one full year of postsecondary studies and will need to submit a formal assessment of their high school academic credentials as well as a transcript of postsecondary records.

There is no age limit nor skill requirement in the other official language for participation in Odyssey. However, basic oral skills in the other official language are considered an asset. For example, an English-speaking candidate would benefit from having at least a basic ability to speak French.
