Photo of a sculpture of a steel column with rectangular-shaped cut-outs.
Commentary

This sculpture is installed at the southeast corner of the Portage Bridge at Laurier Street, in Gatineau.

The column is made of a type of self-weathering, rust-limiting alloy steel. About it, the artist, Phyllis Kurtz Fine, said: My main concern is a purity of aesthetics translated into modern materials and simple forms. I am fascinated with the boundless energy of light and the infinite range of shadow.

This sculpture was donated to the Government of Canada by the artist’s husband after her death in 1979.
