Navigational and NAVAREA warnings

Navigational warnings (NAVWARNs) contain information for boaters about changes to navigational aids and current marine activities or hazards, such as:

  • defects
  • dredging
  • fishing zones
  • military exercises

Contact your nearest Marine Communications and Traffic Services centre for more information about navigational warnings.

Navigational warnings (NAVWARNs) replace Notices to Shipping (NOTSHIPs) and shall be construed as Notices to Shipping.

Marine Communications and Traffic Services centres broadcast navigational warnings containing urgent information. These warnings cover the establishment, condition or change in condition of:

  • procedures
  • marine service
  • marine facilities
  • immediate hazards to mariners

These warnings are posted on the navigational warnings website and remain in effect until cancelled or until covered by a Notice to Mariners (NOTMAR). MCTS centres broadcast the navigational warnings for 7 days on their continuous marine broadcast (CMB) service.

Vessels may refer to Radio Aids to Marine Navigation or search the navigational warnings website for broadcast information. You can also sign up for regular subscriptions to specific warnings using these criteria:

  • date
  • areas
  • series
  • categories
  • search terms
  • status (published or cancelled)

NAVAREA XVII and XVIII warnings

NAVAREA warnings contain information specific to ocean-going mariners. They’re broadcast over satellite and remain in force until cancelled or transmitted by other means. We’re responsible for coordinating navigational warnings issued and broadcast into NAVAREA XVII and NAVAREA XVIII in the Canadian Arctic.
