Canadian Coast Guard’s offshore fisheries science vessels

The offshore fisheries science vessels are designed to be the primary platform for our scientists to conduct offshore fisheries research science and monitoring.

We have had 3 offshore fisheries science vessels built and delivered under the National Shipbuilding Strategy:

CCGS Sir John Franklin, delivered June 27, 2019
CCGS Capt Jacques Cartier, delivered November 29, 2019
CCGS John Cabot, delivered October 9, 2020

These ships will serve as floating laboratories. They are outfitted with modern research equipment and scientific sounders needed to gather crucial data and samples. These vessels will help to collect the information needed for the sustainable management of Canada’s oceans and aquatic resources.

The offshore fisheries science vessels are the first of their kind built in Canada. Each ship includes 5 science stations:

dry lab
wet lab
ocean lab
control lab
marine mammal observation station

These ships will also support search and rescue and environmental response operations to ensure safer waters for Canadians.
