Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Program information
Indigenous and coastal communities have a long history of responding to marine incidents in remote locations. They are often the first and only responders arriving on-scene in time to make a difference. The Canadian Coast Guard’s Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Program provides funding to communities so they can purchase the boats and related equipment needed to participate in Canada’s marine response system.
Combined with training, the program increases Indigenous participation in Canada’s marine response system. It supports communities buying search and rescue vessels and/or equipment needed to be active members of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. This makes waters near Indigenous coastal communities safer for everyone.
Receiving funding as part of this program is a commitment to be an active Auxiliary member. Any vessel or related equipment purchased through this funding must be part of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary for the lesser of the initial life cycle of the equipment or 10 years.
