Canadian Coast Guard spring icebreaking operations underway

The CCGS Martha L. Black will carry out icebreaking operations in the St. Lawrence Seaway, between Cardinal, Ontario, and Saint Lambert, Quebec to facilitate the safe reopening of this vital shipping channel. The icebreaker scheduled for these operations is subject to change depending on operational requirements or weather conditions.

These operations play an important role in public safety. Breaking ice helps prevent the formation of ice jams, which can cause flooding in nearby coastal communities.

Since early March, the Canadian Coast Guard has carried out its annual spring icebreaking operations on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. Each spring, the Canadian Coast Guard provides icebreaking support, escort, and ice management services to aid the safe and efficient movement of people, ships, and goods across Canadian waters.

It is always dangerous to be on the ice when icebreakers, hovercrafts, or any other vessels are in the area. Ice movement can occur and put anyone in the area in danger, even long after the vessel has left.

Icebreaking on the Great Lakes and connecting waterways is delivered through close co-operation between the Canadian and United States Coast Guards. By working together, the two Coast Guards support the safe movement of vessel traffic through the shipping channels and in and out of community harbours. Vessels will be assigned as needed to provide this service.
