Engineering chief talks about the importance of Canadian Coast Guard engineering teams, what they do and why.
Transcript: Meet engineering chief Tim Batchelor
My role is to basically run the engineering of the ship. Basically, a ship is a small city. We have to provide all the systems that a city would want. Potable water, sanitary water, electrical. We also move that city, so we need propulsion, we need steering and we need all the navigational aids and, main engines and balanced stern thruster, that sort of thing.
What I like most about the job is sailing, like traveling the Great Lakes system and it never gets old. Building a good engineering team, it is rewarding. I've had to build several over the years because people like to try different things and people will move on. Then every time I get a new crew, it's an opportunity to train and impart knowledge to this new crew and hopefully build up a solid team that's rewarding.
It makes me feel proud to be working the Coast Guard, and I just fell in love with the sailing aspect of it, and doing this tangible job for Canada and, I've never left it. I love it so much.
