Organizational structure

On September 2, 2025, the Canadian Coast Guard transferred from Fisheries and Oceans Canada to the Department of National Defence (DND). The agency now reports to the Deputy Minister of National Defence and is accountable to Parliament through the Minister of National Defence.

The Canadian Coast Guard, a separate, civilian operating agency under the Defence portfolio, is headquartered in Ottawa. Four Canadian Coast Guard regions stretch from coast to coast to coast.

At the head of the Department is the Minister of National Defence.

The Deputy Minister of National Defence reports to the Minister.

The Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard reports to the Deputy Minister.

Reporting to the Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard are:

  • the Deputy Commissioners
  • 2 Directors General
  • the heads of the various Canadian Coast Guard regions (Assistant Commissioners)

The Arctic Region is inclusive of the Yukon North slope, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, and Hudson and James Bay. This boundary is inclusive of Inuit Nunangat.

The Western Region consists of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Yukon, minus the Yukon slope.

The Central Region consists of Ontario and Quebec, minus the Nunavik region in northern Quebec.

The Atlantic Region consists of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, minus the Nunatsiavut region in Labrador.

The National Headquarters is located in Ottawa, Ontario. The Canadian Coast Guard Academy is located in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
