The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) has supported the company along its journey to reduce its environmental impact.

“In 2014, we began our first expansion phase for refrigeration with Xtreme Cold. Back then, we had access to freon and old ammonia technologies. Now, there are many more options on the market,” said Paul Farrah, President and CEO of Xtreme Cold Storage. “Obviously, it's a lot more expensive, but thanks to ACOA's support through an interest-free loan, we were able to install a low-charge ammonia system. This has enabled us to move forward in terms of technology and efficiency and helped lessen impact on the environment.”

Low-charge ammonia refrigeration systems can offer energy savings of 15–30% compared to traditional freon refrigeration systems. Initial installation costs for ammonia systems are often higher than freon systems, but the lower operating costs and environmental benefits justify the investment over time.
