Growing Community Pride, One Cleanup at a Time

Across Atlantic Canada, communities are finding meaningful ways to turn shared values into tangible results. By coming together around small, practical actions, residents are helping create cleaner, more welcoming places to live.

In Saint John, that commitment is reflected through the City’s Green Machine program, which empowers residents to take pride in their neighbourhoods and play a hands-on role in caring for shared public spaces.

The Green Machine is a mobile cleanup trailer that provides residents with easy access to the tools needed to organize community-led cleanups. By removing practical barriers, the program empowers neighbourhood groups, schools, and volunteers to take a hands-on role in enhancing the spaces they share.

“The Green Machine is about making it easy for residents to take pride in their neighbourhoods,” says Craig Ganong, Supervisor of Community Development for the City of Saint John. “By removing barriers and providing the tools, we are seeing more community-led cleanups and stronger connections between neighbors. It is a simple program, but the impact across the city continues to grow each year.”

Beyond cleaner streets and green spaces, the program helps strengthen community connections. Cleanup efforts bring people together around a shared purpose, fostering collaboration, local pride, and a sense of ownership that extends well beyond the day’s work.

At ACOA, we have the privilege of working with communities across Atlantic Canada and seeing firsthand how local leadership and practical solutions can lead to lasting impact. Initiatives like the City of Saint John’s Green Machine show how empowering residents and supporting community pride can help build more vibrant, connected, and sustainable cities - an outcome worth highlighting this Earth Day.
