In Woodstock, New Brunswick, Ironwood is tackling the affordable housing challenge head-on with its new 118,000-square-foot facility, a state-of-the-art plant producing modular homes designed for quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

During the past few years, housing shortages have strained families and communities nationwide. Traditional construction, often slowed by weather and labour constraints, has struggled to keep pace with demand.

According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), restoring affordability to pre-pandemic levels will require nearly doubling the pace of construction – 430,000 to 480,000 new housing units annually for the next decade. Ironwood is scaling up to support this national goal.

By building indoors year-round and delivering nearly completed homes to their sites, Ironwood shortens timelines dramatically, helping Canadians move into quality housing faster. Supported by a combined $3 million-plus investment from the provincial government and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the company is expanding, increasing production with specialized equipment, and creating jobs. Today, Ironwood employs 60 people and plans to grow to 85, strengthening the local economy while increasing housing supply.

“Ironwood wouldn’t be where we are today without ACOA,” says Mark Gaddas, company President. “From lean manufacturing programs to equipment purchases, they’ve supported us from the very beginning – every step of the way.”

Ironwood’s vision extends beyond construction; it’s also about building skills for the future.

Through its partnership with New Brunswick Community College, Ironwood offers students hands-on experience on the plant floor, applying classroom learning in real-world manufacturing. This practical training helps prepare future skilled workers - a benefit for both the company and the community.

From mini homes to multi-unit buildings, Ironwood’s modular designs offer flexibility and affordability, proving that solutions to Canada’s housing challenge can start in small towns and ripple across the country.
