The accident flight was part of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Private Pilot Training Course in Steinbach, MB. The crew consisted of an Air Cadet student pilot and an instructor conducting a Private Pilot syllabus flight.
The crew initiated a take-off from grass runway 25 with the student at the controls. During the take-off run, the aircraft drifted laterally to the right until contacting corn stalks approximately 134 feet (41 meters) past the intersection of runway 18/36. The instructor took control of the aircraft but was unable to fully return the aircraft to the grass surface. The aircraft remained in contact with the corn for approximately 272 feet (83 meters) before departing into the corn field at an estimated 15 degree angle. The aircraft tipped forward with the nose and right wingtip impacting the ground before coming to a rest. The crew egressed the aircraft normally.
The aircraft sustained very serious damage, and there were no injuries.
The investigation is focusing on human and organizational factors.
