In Canada, marine and terrestrial OECMs were formally recognized as a policy approach in 2017 and 2018, respectively, and added to the Canadian Protected and Conserved Areas Database (CPCAD) (https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/national-wildlife-areas/protected-conserved-areas-database.html), even though the measure(s) may have been established in previous years. Trends are estimated based on the date a site was reported and recognized as a protected area or OECM in the CPCAD. As the database is updated, when boundaries of a conserved area change, the reported date the area is recognized as conserved can also change. For this reason, comparisons with previous reports should be made with caution.
