The indicator reports estimates of the percentage of deaths attributable to short-term exposure to O3 over 7-year periods and shows differences in the estimates relative to the respective reference period (first 7-year period). A total of 84 communities were analyzed for the regional indicator for O3, covering 78% of the Canadian population. The Eastern Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec) region is composed of 32 communities (covering 18% of the Canadian population); Central Canada (Ontario) has 31 communities (covering 35% of the Canadian population); and Western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia) has 21 communities (covering 25% of the Canadian population). In order to determine trends, 7-year periods were used to avoid abnormally high or low estimates due to data availability.
